Species M-113, also known as Salt Vampires, is a species that originated on the planet M-113. The creatures were thought to be extinct by 2266, until they attacked Hfihar Mining Facility in 2409.

Culture

Nothing is known about the creatures' culture, however they do seem to be intelligent. They require sodium chloride (salt) to survive, and will kill anything within reach to gain it if they are desperate enough. They extract the salt from their victims using several sucker-like feeding organs on their fingers, leaving painful-looking circular red marks on the victim's skin. The creatures also have the ability to morph into seemingly any humanoid form they wish, allowing them to impersonate various individuals.

History

Origins

Little is known about the origins of the species, except that it is native to the planet M-113.

23rd century

Scientists Professor Robert Crater and his wife, Nancy Crater, moved to the planet M-113 in 2261, to conduct surveys on the ruins there. One of the creatures, thought to be the last of its kind, killed Nancy Crater in 2264 or 2265. It was content to leave Professor Crater alone so long as he fed it salt, and he did not kill it so long as it posed as his wife.

In 2266, the U.S.S. Enterprise was visiting the planet to conduct routine medical exams on the Craters. The creature, still posing as Nancy Crater, managed to board the Enterprise by killing and then posing as an officer. After impersonating and killing several others, it was finally shot and killed by Dr. Leonard McCoy.

25th century

After the incident in 2266, the species was thought to be extinct until a multitude of these creatures appeared and attacked the Hfihar Mining Facility in the Hfihar System in 2409. Currently, it is not known how these creatures arrived on the planet; however, they appear to be genetically altered to derive their salt intake from the copper-based blood of Romulans.
